The Grey tribe is formed; legend says it began with the daughter of a 'great owl' and a human man, the latter of which was killed when the daughter burst precocial from his body. Wolves which fed on the woman's father's flesh were thus indebted to her. The wolves became human over time, and together with the woman became the Greys[1].
A hole into the void is torn. It contains all of the knowledge in the universe[2]. Its effects on the human psyche are detrimental[3].
A "Great Beast" crawls from the hole. It spends the next few decades predating on the Greys[4], maiming bloodlines for generations[5].
An explosion in the sky leads many to believe the beast has been slain, but this is not true[4]. The Greys send their most adept hunter to investigate what they see of the explosion-- a bright light-- and the hunter returns a handful of hours afterwards, only a couple hours after the light had gone out. Over the next few months, the hunter brings the Greys to a lake he had found whilst investigating the explosion[6].
Following a series of disappearances, the Grey tribe discovers that the hunter they had sent to investigate had since become a cannibalistic beast. They make a deal with it, offering sacrifices in exchange for the beast's permission for the Greys to continue living at the lake[6].
17th Century[]
1663-1676[]
A seer of the Grey tribe speaks a prophecy, bringing a faction of tribe members together. Colonists settle in Nockfell. The two factions are united via a marriage between Citlali Grey, the seer, and Wesley Rosenberg, a colonist[7][8].
1677-1681[]
The newly-formed cult construct an underground temple[7] off of pre-existing worship chambers lain within a natural cave system[9].
18th Century[]
1703[]
A church is built aboveground to hide the temple, doubling as an indoctrination method. Another ceremonial marriage takes place, between the Grey and Phelps families[10].
Mid-1700's[]
Citlali Grey receives her final prophecy– that a “blue flame,” “child of the abomination” will formidably stand against the cult, after being resurrected by the pyramids of Asintmah[11]. The prophecy is accepted into cult doctrine, and members begin preparing to prevent its coming about[12].
19th Century[]
1887[]
Fredrick and Henrietta Addison arrive from “overseas” to start a business[13]. The last surviving member of the family created from the seer-colonist union, Alyson Rosenberg, sells her land to the Addisons[14]. Addison Apartments is built, thus expanding both the temple and its cult[15].
1900-1979[]
1905[]
Terrance Addison is born. He is chosen to become the entry point of The Endless One. To do this, he is fed human flesh[16].
1906[]
A new prophecy states that upon killing the Child of the Abomination, a man from the sky– later believed by the cult to be Jim Johnson– will arrive to stop them, unless they persuade him to join the cult, whereupon he will assist them immensely[17][18].
1917[]
Terrence Addison's soul is destroyed by The Endless One. His parents are murdered when they attempt to push against the cult’s wishes[19][20].
1932[]
Terrance's appearance begins to change, and he is locked in his room to preserve the Council's secret. His power grows, and the cult is able to harness it[19][21].
1934[]
Nockfell Mills is established. Throughout its 70-year existence, it burns down three times[22][23].
1938[]
The first shadow is successfully summoned by the Cult[24], at the demand of the Endless One[25].
The Cult try to enlist Jim but he refuses. Lisa becomes pregnant but the baby is stillborn. Jim suspects the Cult is to blame[52].
1983[]
Jim Johnson is initiated into the cult in order to protect his family. He makes his way onto the Council[53][54].
1984[]
Larry Johnson kills Mrs. Gibson's pet rabbit Nutmeg whilst playing with firecrackers. The Red-Eyed Demon appears to Larry, who thus believes that the former has placed a curse on him. The next day, Jim Johnson leaves to attempt to stop the cult’s plan. He succeeds in lessening its scope[55][56], but ultimately fails and is killed in the process[57][58].
August 16th-- The cult enacts a plan to eliminate those they view as possible threats to them under the Child of the Abomination prophecy[55]. They end up killing 255 children and 32 adults, all across North America[56]. Numbered among these is Sal's mother, Diane Fisher[29], killed by Kenneth Phelps when Sal attempts to pet him under the impression that he is a dog, and Diane uses her body to shield her son. Sal’s face is permanently disfigured.
Stacy Holmes, Alyson Rosenberg, Greg Montague, and Sandy Sanderson[59][60] form a plot to stop the cult’s summoning of the Red-Eyed Demon[61][62]. They succeed in prolonging it. However, the plot ends in a shadow-infected Luke Holmes killing his wife, his daughter, and himself[26][50][30][51][63][64] within the Apartments in a fit of rage after catching Stacy fooling around with Greg[65][66][67][68][69].
[1984-1987][]
Henry Fisher puts the Fisher home on the market[64][70].
1988[]
Gizmo is born, and assigned to Sal in an attempt to help him cope with the trauma of his mother’s death. It is effective, and Gizmo becomes a part of the Fisher family[70][71].
1990[]
Henry's house is sold, and he applies for a new job in Nockfell[72].
1991[]
Todd and Neil meet in the school library[73][74] and at some point before 1994 begin dating[75].[76]
1992[]
Strange Neighbors takes place[77] around August, after the 16th[78][79][80]; Sandy Sanderson is murdered[31] by a possessed Charley Mansfield as revenge for her actions against the cult[60]. The episode begins the morning after, just as Sal and his father have moved into the building[81][82]. Sal is 15 at this time[83], entering his freshman year[84]. Kim Yazzie is hired at the school August 10th[34]. Sal meets the residents of Addison Apartments, specifically Larry Johnson, who tells Sal about witnessing Sandy's murder. After meeting a red-eyed, coal-black demon in Larry's kitchen, Sal wishes to investigate the murder. Larry draws the police from the scene for Sal to investigate it himself. Sal notices an empty place in-between two of Sandy's glitter ponies in her collection. On the fifth floor, Sal finds a bottle of laxatives, as well as the ghost of a shy Megan Holmes. Sal drugs the tea with either the laxatives from 504 or sleeping pills from Sal’s father before giving the tea to Charley. After obtaining the missing pony from Charley’s room and giving it to the authorities, Charley is arrested.
1993[]
The Wretched takes place about six months later[85][86]; Through nightmares, Sal once again meets the Red-Eyed Demon. Larry tells Sal about the former’s supposed curse, and they reach an agreement to try to lift it. Larry also introduces to Sal a puzzle box left by his father. It is missing a piece. A failed attempt on a Saturday[87][88][89] to summon Megan brings Sal to meet Todd Morrison, and incidentally Ashley Campbell as well. Todd makes modifications to Sal's gear boy, turning it into a ghost hunting machine. It briefly summons the ghost of Greg Montague in Todd’s bathroom. Investigations into the town’s history reveal in part that the “police” that arrested Charley Mansfield were not listed in the police database. Another brief interaction with Megan's ghost has Sal retrieving Lisa’s crowbar from David’s room. It's there that Sal finds the final puzzle piece of Jim's box; upon solving it, he finds a computer chip which summons the phantom, Jim's ghost. He gives Sal an unintelligible message, only managing to effectively communicate “red ball”. Following his departure, the chip is replaced by a rubix cube, and neither Larry nor Todd can recall the chip. Sal continues summoning ghosts; all disappear but one, the ghost of Luke Holmes, who promptly sheds its skin, revealing itself as the Red-Eyed Demon. Before it can cause physical harm, Larry uses one of Todd’s inventions to dismiss the demon.
1994[]
The Bologna Incident takes place in Sal's sophomore year[90][91][92], earlier than May 23rd[93], on a weekday other than Friday[94], around time for spring break[95][96][97], over a year after the end of episode two[85]. Sal's class takes a maths test. He does well with little effort, earning a punch in the face from Travis. The next day is bologna day. Noting its flavour, the four decide to investigate the meat’s origin. Sal and Larry team up to appeal to the cafeteria lady’s favour, giving her a picture of a songbird. She then informs them that the meat comes from the maths teacher, Mrs. Packerton. On his way to the lab to test the meat, Sal comes across Travis crying to himself in the bathroom. On the floor, astray from the trash can, is a note he’s dropped– a romantic confession, open-ended, but for a boy. Sal comforts Travis despite his threats, telling Travis that if he ever wanted to be friends, the opportunity would be open for him. Sal and Larry then break into Packerton's classroom. Inside her desk are a handful of occult objects, which trigger Jim's ghost to appear once more. His words are just as incomprehensible as the first time. Sal and Larry decide to break into Packerton’s apartment to investigate further. Inside, they find a refrigerator and two doors; in the fridge, a severed goat head; behind one door, one half-late Mr. Packerton, hooked up to life support– his ghost begs Sal to pull the plug, and Sal complies. Ash then joins the search party, scaring the others half to death, as they mistake her for Mrs. Packerton. Inside the other room lies bloodstains, newspaper clippings of missing children reports, and another fridge, decorated with a pentagram. Inside it sits the deboned bodies of their missing classmates. Before an action plan can be made for Packerton, a clamour is heard as Ash falls down a trash chute in the wall. Sal and Larry retrieve Todd, and through a door inside a hidden room in the basement, the temple of the Devourers of God is found. Todd is left at the doorway to keep it open. Behind a myriad of puzzles, Sal and Larry find Ash unharmed yet unconscious atop a mountain of bones. Once safe, Larry, Ash, and Todd suggest killing Mrs. Packerton, something Sal is vehemently against. Sal convinces them to sleep on the idea, which proves to be irrelevant, as in the morning they discover that Packerton has been killed in a car accident.
1996[]
The gang graduate from high school, and Sal moves into a new house with Todd[98].
1997[]
Ash leaves Nockfell for art school, and Neil moves in with Todd and Sal[99].
1998[]
Henry Fisher and Lisa Johnson marry, making Sal and Larry step-brothers[100].
1999[]
In April, Sal and Larry see The Matrix in theatres together. They like it so much that they watch it twice. It is the last movie that they watch together[101].
Ash tags along for her last ghost hunt somewhere about a year before Ep. 4– It would seem things didn’t go so well[105].
Sal's nightmares return, and the ghosts disappear from Addison Apartments[102]. Nockfell Mills burns down again. Sal and Larry investigate one last time. Larry plans to move in with Sal, Todd, and Neil, but never gets the chance. Sal and Ash meet up for a date at the lake. They catch up, reminisce, and scream to the skies to relieve the stress of life. Larry takes his own life in his treehouse in an attempt to halt the progress of the Red-Eyed Demon’s grasp on the Apartments. Ash comes to see Sal. His state makes her think he is drunk– she tells his parents he’s not okay, and then leaves, an action she comes to regret. Sal goes to investigate the treehouse, finding only an empty alcohol bottle. He speaks to the ghost of Rose, then relays to Todd. Mid-conversation, he is unceremoniously transported to the roof of the apartment building. Larry's ghost assists him in destroying the pillar(s). This temporarily relieves the residents from the control of the Red-Eyed Demon. Sal enters the apartments and attempts to speak to its hermit owner, Terrence Addison. He is instead met by the Endless One that lives inside Terrance, which Sal kills, upon which Terrence departs with a terrible mission for Sal: kill the apartments’ residents, to stop the spread of the demon. Sal complies, save for Herman Sanderson, who takes his own life out of grief that same evening from losing his wife, and Maple, who is out on a trip. Todd is chosen as the host of the Red-Eyed Demon. Sal is arrested the second he leaves the building, confronted by both the police and Ash.[103]
2000's[]
2000[]
Todd’s condition worsens day by day, and he is sent to an asylum and locked in solitary. Sal has a court ordained therapist, a Dr. Enon, to judge if Sal is viable for a plea of insanity. While initially unwilling to open up about Larry, especially when Enon expresses skepticism about involvement of the supernatural, on the last appointment before the trial Sal eventually tells Enon that all of the answers he needs are in Larry's treehouse. There, Enon does meet Larry's ghost, which causes him to have a heart attack, fall from the tree, and perish. This news is delivered to Sal by the phantom. [104]
2001[]
At his trial, Sal refuses a lawyer, instead representing himself and telling his story to the court. Between mass amounts of personal testimony, a replaced Dr. Enon claiming that Sal is of perfect sanity, and the testimony of a concerned Ashley, Sal is deemed guilty, and–- against Ash's best efforts-- sentenced to death. [105]
2004[]
December[106][48], 6:33 pm – In Nockfell prison, Sal is executed via electric chair. Ashley Campbell is his only witness.
[2004-2005][]
Todd escapes the institution holding him through help from the cult.
2005[]
Larry escapes into the Black Room(?) by convincing Ash to burn down his treehouse. Five months after Todd’s kidnapping[107], Ash visits Sal's grave. She gives to him the three Pyramids of Asintmah, with which he is able to recover the shattered fragments of his soul across multiple realities. Jim Johnson helps guide Sal to resurrection through this method. Ash sacrifices herself in order for him to return, and this allows him to both share space inside her head and create a supernaturally powered arm which allows them to beat back the dark. With the unexpected help of Travis, the two manage to enter the central chamber of the cult’s temple, finding the sacrificed bodies of Neil, Maple, a man with purple hair, and a woman with green hair, as well as a congregation of cult members headed by Kenneth Phelps. Travis gets his final revenge on his father, driving a sword into his chest and pulling them both into the void. Though nearly consumed by the dark, Sal is saved by an old, wizardly ghost version of Larry. Together with Ash, they three stop the plague of shadows and defeat the void.
2005-onwards[]
Larry vanishes after the final battle, but Ash, Sal, and Todd never stop trying to bring him back. The plague of shadows had killed ⅓ of the earth’s population before it was stopped. Todd manages to recover from his possession, but scraps of the Red-Eyed Demon remain. He works hard to keep it under control, and potentially eventually use it for good. Sal continues to drift through dimensions and patch up the dark’s effects.
Contradictions[]
Larry's birth year is 1976 in the game[44][45], but later stated to be 1975 on social media and in the book[47][46].
The year Henry puts the Fisher home on the market is implied to be immediately after Diane's death in the game[70], but is stated to be three years later in the book[64].
The Bologna Incident has been stated to have taken place a year and a half after The Wretched, and about two years after Strange Neighbors[85], but this would place it at around August[78][79], which would be nowhere near May[93] nor time for any school breaks[95][96][97].
