The Grey Tribe was a Native American tribe that existed sometime before 1623 and continued to exist until they gradually disbanded in the modern era. While not evil themselves, a small faction branched off following their seer Citlali Grey's prophecy in 1663, which became the Devourers of God and combined with the Phelps, Rosenberg, and Addison families. They were said to have psychic abilities, the most notable of which being the gift of prophecy which was proven existent.
Biography[]
The tribe was said to originate when a giant owl swooped out of the sky and made love to a lost man. A few weeks later, a beautiful young woman burst out of him, killing him. A pack of wolves ate the remains, becoming indebted to the woman, and stayed by her side until they became human. The descendants of the woman are gifted with psychic abilities.
Discovering Nockfell[]
In approximately 1623, the tribe came upon an unusual light in the woods, and sent a mighty hunter to investigate. When he returned, he told of Wendigo Lake, and the tribe settled there, founding a community that would become Nockfell. People began disappearing, and it was revealed the hunter had become "a beast" which was the tribe's interpretation of either infection or possession, shown in-game as the work of the Red-Eyed Demon. However, the description of the hunter as a "beast" bears more resemblance to the Endless One, (the Red-Eyed Demon is always described as humanoid) and it is possible, though unlikely, that the hunter was an early host. The tribe made a deal with the beast to be left alone and allowed to live on that land in exchange for sacrifices.
The Devourers of God faction[]
In 1663, Citlali Grey spoke a prophecy that led a faction of the tribe to form a cult bent on protecting the beast and destroying the "Great Atrocity" (presumed to be God, hence the name). When the Addisons, Rosenbergs, and Phelps arrived from overseas, they joined this faction as well, Wesley Rosenberg even marrying Citlali Grey, that grew even as the tribe disbanded, and later became a global threat throughout the course of the game.
Descendants[]
In game, the Devourers of God have evolved beyond the tribe, and so are something different altogether. The only two in-game direct descendants are Alyson Rosenberg, who says simply that she is the last of her family, and that she was involved with the Addisons, and Tala Grey, who is encountered in the Third Dimension. Tala explains to Sal that she doesn't live in Nockfell, and is there searching for her missing grandfather. She states her grandfather believed in the origin story of Nockfell, but expresses her own disbelief, adding that the beast wasn't evil, just hungry. The latter belief is one shared by the Devourers of God, but there is no indication that she is in anyway involved with them, and it's likely that they were the reason her grandfather disappeared.
